Extreme (X) Lenstm technology changing the face of led grow lights for an entire industry.

the foundation of any led grow light is the led. more important than the led
however, is the optic used to direct light from it. standard led grow lights
use a led attached to a pcb (printed circuit board), with a small lens covering
each individual chip. this design proved capable, yet despite the availability
of 60 degree, 90 degree, and 120 degree lenses to focus output, a fair
majority of the light emitted from the lens fell outside it's primary
"viewing angle". Observing this, hydro grow sought out a way to re-
focus this light and direct it back towards the plants where it can be used.

 

led's have been used in many products during the past 20 years, including flashlights, street
lights, and Stage Lights. One thing
all of these products shared is that
they utilized a second, and much larger
lens over the led to re-focus light. it was found during testing that this lens not only altered the projection properties
of light, but also amplified output. observing this, hydro grow began testing on over 20 different types of secondary lenses to pick the one with the best output characteristics for led grow lights.

while 4x the output was a tremendous achieve- ment for led grow lights, our secon- dary goal was to ensure even spread of light intensity throughout the area covered. to an ensure an even spread, the led's had to be spaced further apart compared to previous models, with light engines spread further from each other on the panel. the x-lens was also given a convex design opposed to a concave or flat design, as it gives the led more surface area and allows for a more even dispersion of light.

The final goal for the x-lens was to ensure the highest penetration possible, using the 400W, 600W, and 1000W HPS as our benchmark to beat. careful detail was put into the precise shaping of our x-lens to ensure maximum light projection. as a result our 336X-PRO emits the same amount of par light at 36", as a 1000W HPS at 48"! this means more light is delivered to the lower parts of your plants, providing deeper penetration for bigger fruits and heavier yields.

Much like computers, LED's are a chip-based technology and their operating temperature not only affects performance, but lifespan as well. one factor that determines temperature is how much current is passing through the led. The max current a 1W LED can handle is 350mA, and for 3W LED's it is 700mA. The higher the current passing through the led, the hotter it will become. It is therefore very important that 3W LED's have increased thermal manage-ment compared to 1W led's.


The graph above comes from Cree and shows how operating temperatures affect light output from led's. The optimal temperature for led's is between 77-90°F, where output remains between 98-100%. As temperature increases, efficiency decreases to where at only 150°F output has fallen 10%! this reduction in output efficiency also causes faster decay to the led. hydro grow has tested many led grow lights from competitors using 3W led's, and found that the majority of these lights operate between 145-170°F! LED's decay approximately 30% over 50,000 hours of use when operated between 77-122°F, but when temperatures rise above 122°F the rate of decay can increase dramatically. It is therefore very important that a led grow light operate below 122°F to ensure full lifespan.

 

copper heatsinkmaintaining led's at their optimal operating temperature requires heavy-duty heatsinking. our previous penetrator and penetrator pro lights were engineered by china, and produced with flat-plate, aluminum heatsinks like most other led grow lights from china. using this design our 345W PRO reached operating temperatures as high as 127°F, while our 345W reached 105°F. while these temperatures are tolerable, hydro grow is obsessed with having the highest efficiency possible, so we engineered our own cooling system.


three qualities of a heatsink that affect its ability to cool are the materials it is made of, the thickness of those materials, and the overall surface area of the heatsink. Thick aluminum was chosen as the primary metal for our heatsink due to its lightweight properties. We paired this aluminum with a 3mm copper insert, since copper has approximately 2x the conductivity of aluminum and helps reduce semidconductor temperatures. Copper also provides for a more even heat transfer from one surface to the next, reducing "hot spots". the heatsink was then finished with ultra-thin fins to increase surface area and dissipate heat faster.


because operating currents affect the need for cooling, hydro grow chose 3 different thickness heatsinks for our product lines. an 8mm heatsink was created for our eco and eco+ (0.5W) models, a 15 mm heatsink was created for our penetrator-x (1W) models, and a 20mm heatsink was created for our penetrator x-prO (3W) models. We then tested our 336X-PRO in a room where the ambient temperature was 78°F, and after 6 hours of use it reached operating temperatures of only 82°F! compared to the chinese engineering on our 345W PRO, our new 336X-PRO now operates a full 45°F (35%) cooler! This means 100% lifespan and 100% light output from all of our 1W and 3W models!

Exclusive to hydro grow's extreme led grow lights is our patent-pending, modular manufacturing process. Rather than building a light where all led's are contained on a single pcb (printed circuit board), each of our 21-LED light engines has its own pcb to operate independent of the others. to build a module, each pcb is "sandwiched" between a heatsink and X-lens via phillips head screws. Once assembled and connected to a power supply, each module is essentially its own led grow light. our intelligent design is then finished off with clip-in electrical connectors, making assembly and dissasembly a snap.

 

The hydro grow modular design holds many advantages over competng led grow lights. For example, if a single pcb fails the rest of the light continues to operate as usual. There is no need to discontinue use of the light, and to diagnose the problem usually takes less than 15 minutes. Once diagnosed a new part is sent to you for clip-in or screw-in installation, which takes another 15-20 minutes. if dealing with the competition you may wait weeks to receive a functioning light after sending it in for repair, but thanks to our modular design there is no "down-time" in the event of a warranty issue.
